French film Between the Walls wins Palme d’Or

On May 25 at the Cannes Film Festival the French film Between the Walls
received the highest honor, the Golden Palm (Palme d’Or) Award.
narrates the story of a year’s life between teachers and students at a
secondary school in Paris. The film mainly focuses on how the characters
face poverty and immigration issues.

Directed by Laurent Cantet, Between the Walls is the first French film to
win an award at the Cannes Film Festival in 21 years. Cantet’s entry was
the last native French film to announce its participation in the festival.
Although this film has received a lot of praise from the French film
industry, it wasn’t considered a favorite for winning an award.

Chairman of the Jury – Sean Penn on the other hand, greatly appreciated
the film.

Outside of the ceremonial hall the French people were ecstatic about their
native film winning an award. A native French viewer said, “I am, of
course, very pleased with a French film winning this award. I think this
film deserves the award.”

Another attendee from France told reporters “I am glad it is a French
film, a film that entered into the Cannes Film Festival that represents
France. I am very happy.”

With French high schools overcrowded with students teen violence has
gradually become a popular political topic. A cinematic discussion of the
education system, Between the Walls is a product of just such an
environment. To director Lauren Cantet, the corona of the Palme d’Or prize
could enable more people to recognize the importance of this issue.

After the closing ceremony Cantet said, “Winning this award would attract
more people to watch this film that I also like by myself.” The director
also shared hopes that “there would be more concerns to the issues
discussed in this film; this would make me very happy.”

A total of 22 films were entered into this year’s film festival at
Cannes. Chinese director Jia Zhangke’s 24 Cities in Mind carried the
expectations of many, but did not win an award.
