A thought on “Forever” sparks from “2012”
Author: Yuan Jian

In the face of this materialistic and modernized world, the majority has chosen unintentionally to overlook their history and ignored prophecy. “2012” has indeed given the modern people a whack on the head. Mayans prediction of 2012 unfolds ahead of time in the faces of humanity. In “2012”, when the catastrophe approaches, statesmen, scientists, strategists, educationalists, artists, finance world and common people--everyone appears vulnerable.

“2012” is directed by Roland Emmerich -- Hollywood's dominion king of catastrophe, the critically scorned director of "Independence Day" and "Godzilla"-- the question on humanity salvation is proposed by the director, unfortunately the movie does not give a satisfactory and convincing answer. Perhaps the audiences should ponder and seek for one themselves.

In the movie the director confronts humanities. Ironies are built upon human choices. When Chinese Communist Party officers transport animals and those wealthy men with proper documents instead of people in real danger at the snowy mountain scene, send chills to the audiences. Moral virtues seem to be the deciding factor for which characters will survive. Mankind needs to seriously stop mutual massacring to avoid the ultimate elimination. China is suggested as the place for salvation, but the road needs to be paved by virtues.

Perhaps it is the intention of the director to leave it to the audiences to fill the blanks; perhaps it is the intention of the director to share his confusion; perhaps it is the intention of the director to display the contradictions in mankind. With such a heavy topic, one should not make excessive demands on the director to provide a simple solution. We should thank the director for bringing this serious topic for us to ponder upon at this point in history.

In order to comprehend this topic, one needs to look into the past and present history of China. The new film by Shen Zhou Film Studio “Forever” came to my mind. From the angle of a new reporter, we learn and see the present situation in China. The courage to quit the Chinese Communist Party is strong and growing.

Although “2012” ended with the view of dawn in sight; it left the audiences feeling unsure. On the other hand, “Forever” leaves one feeling full of hope in the near future. Perhaps, deep in people』s hearts they do feel the strength from compassion.
